Public Service Announcements
New: You can now submit your PSA online! Please read the guidelines below to ensure the success of your submission.
Public Service Announcements are a cornerstone of Community Radio. We take this community service very seriously at WEFT. Our airshifters have enormous freedom as to what they can do, but one of the rules they have to follow is that they must read two public service announcements (or PSAs) per hour.
How PSAs Work at WEFT
- You can either mail your PSA to the Station or drop by in person to drop it off. PSAs sent to the station by email will not be considered at this time.
- Please mail them to:
Attention: PSA enclosed
WEFT 90.1FM
113 North Market Street
Champaign, IL 61820
The printed material should be large enough to read clearly, take 20-30 seconds to read, and should fit on a 5"x7" note card.
- The hard copy PSAs are taped to 5"x7" index cards and placed in our PSA file.
- Airshifters pick out at least two PSAs to read on air every hour. There are no guarantees that your specific announcement will be read, or when it will be read. That depends on our airshifters choice, how well it is written, etc.
If you wish a guarantee on your announcement, or if you are a for-profit organization, please look into Underwriting at WEFT.
Things to keep in mind
- Format your PSA with the "who, what, when, where, why" basics:
- Who is sponsoring the event?
- What is the event?
- When will the event be held (date/time)?
- Where will the event be held?
- Why is the event taking place?
While your PSA does not have to adhere to any particular order, if you make sure these basics are answered in a logical flow, your message will be communicated more clearly to the listeners.
- The more brief the PSA, the better. Try to keep the PSA no longer than 30-45 seconds. Time them out by reading the copy. Think about how your attention would be held if you were a listener.
- Keep in mind that a WEFT host who does not represent your organization will be reading your PSA on the air. Therefore, it is important to write the PSA in the third person, rather than in first person. For example, rather than writing "we are looking for" or "we are sponsoring", write "they" or "the [organization name] is sponsoring", etc.
- As a non-commercial radio station, we cannot mention prices. If there is a fee, you can mention that "a fee will be charged." If you are seeking donations, you can state that "donations are requested" or that "there will be a suggested donation" for the event. If the event is "free and open to the public" you can mention that as well.
We hope this clarification is helpful and encourage you and your organization to send us your PSAs. We reserve the right to change the text of PSAs, but we do not change the meaning. You may ask us to remove your PSA at any time.
