On Air

WEFT Is Back to Full Power!

WEFT is back to broadcasting to our full coverage area in East Central Illinois at 10,000 watts! We replaced our storm damaged 20 year old transmitter which was struck by lightning on May 30th. As of 4:40 PM, Wednesday, July 2, we have been operating with our new state of the art transmitter from Broadcast Electronics. This is a solid state unit which requires no tubes as we have used previously, and provides more ease of maintenance. We are excited about broadcasting a more clear and reliable signal to our listeners.

The price of the transmitter is $51,000. There are other associated costs for installation and materials. We will be raising funds to replace more aging equipment in order to enhance our on air sound even further. Stay tuned for more details.

We thank all our listeners for your patience and support in resolving this situation. Please pass the word on that WEFT is back to full power and full broadcast coverage, with a brand new transmitter. And, remind those outside our listening area to tune into our webcast.

If you would like to donate to our efforts, please click on the Donate Now button. Or contribute during our on air and on line Membership Drive Friday, August 1 - Thursday, August 14.

Computer science, a field which encourages creative problem-solving for great pay, should not be a hard sell. It should appeal to those who want to improve web interfaces for the blind, speed up parallel performance for biological simulations, perform search on video content, or create digital narrative media. It should engage those who want to make social impact as others have made world-wide with the cellular phone, Google, and YouTube. It should, but does not.

Tune in July 2nd at 6 pm for a 1 hour program called, "Diversity in Technology." Tanya Crenshaw, with the help of guests from the University of Illinois, will discuss how the faces of today's computer science community do not reflect those of the larger global community. Based on her recent study of the Department of Computer Science at UIUC, she will discuss solutions for improving diversity in her field.
